Inspect when patient is sitting, standing and walking. Weight bearing should fall on the middle of the foot, from the heel, along the midfoot, to between the second and third toes. Support ankle by grasping heel with your fingers while palpating with your thumbs. Explore joint spaces should feel smooth and depressed with no fullness, swelling or tenderness. Abnormal: hallux valgus, hammertoes, claw toes, swelling or inflammation, calluses and ulcers, plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, eversion and inversion. Palpate the metatarsophalangeal joints b/w thumb on the dorsum and your ringers on the plantar surface should not have swelling, inflammation, tenderness. Test rom: dorsiflexion, plantar flexion against your resistance. Look for horizontal positions for the shoulders, scapulae etc. Person"s knees and feet should be aligned with trunk. From side, note normal convex thoracic curve and concave lumbar curve.
