Document Summary

It was originally thought that proteins were the carriers of genetic material. Nucleotide: consists of 5c sugar- deoxyribose, a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base. Built from a pair of fused rings of c and n atoms. Chargaff"s rule: amount of adenine= amount of thymine, amount of guanine= Complementary base pairing: a purine must pair up with a pyrimidine to fit perfectly. (a t, g c). Base pairs are stabilized by hydrogen bonds, which hold together the double helix. Nucleotides form a polynucleotide chain: has an alternating sugar- phosphate backbone. The two ends of the chain are not the same. One end has a phosphate group bound to the 5" end of the sugar, and the other end has a hydroxyl group bound to the 3" end of the sugar. The two ends are called the 5" end and the 3" end.
