Document Summary

Sickle cell anemia occurence-->individual receives 2 copies of a gene (1 from each parent) that codes for altered subunit of hemoglobin--> difference in 1 amino acid. Oxygen rich blood cells don"t get to tissues-->tissues die. Scientists used to believe in the blending theory of inheritance: blood from both parents blend and the traits equally reside in the child. Trait: the specifics of a character such as round shaped. Self fertilize or self-pollinate is when a flower sperm nuclei in it"s anthers fertilizes egg cells in it"s own carpel. True-breeding: plant pass traits from one generation to the next without change. P generation: plants used in initial cross pollination. F1 generation: first generation of offspring from the cross pollination. F1 generation didn"t show trait from parent generation, but f2 generation did. Different version of a gene that produce different traits = alleles (eg: if cross pollinating brown and yellow plants, alleles are brown and yellow)
