BIOL 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Gregor Mendel, Dihybrid Cross, Punnett Square
Document Summary
10. 1 the beginnings of genetics: mendel"s garden peas. Blending theory of inheritance- suggests that hereditary traits blend evenly in offspring through mixing of the parents" blood. Gregor mendel studied a variety of heritable characteristics called characters, such as flower colour or seed shape of peas. Trait- a variation in a character ex. Genes- discrete hereditary factors passed to offsprings. Gametes are produced in the structure of the flowers: the male gametes are sperm nuclei contained in the pollen which is produced in the anthers, the female gametes are egg cells produced in the carper. Pea plants self-fertilize (also known as self-polinate: sperm nuclei in pollen produced by anthers fertilize egg cells housed in the carpel of the same flower. Mendel prevented self fertilization by cutting off the anthers so that pollen to fertilize these flowers had to come from different plants (called cross-pollination)
