Document Summary

These jobs are sometimes referred to as "dead-end jobs" because of the lack of upward mobility associated with them, employers often create primary labour markets for some employees but not for others. In a single firm, managers can have access to mobility through an internal labour market while their clerical, production, and maintenance staff may have little room to move up. In today"s service economy, employers" increasing use of temporary and part-time workers is another way in which secondary labour markets are created within companies. Job ghettos are parts of the labour market that prevent certain groups of workers from experiencing upward mobility. Indigenous people face formidable barriers in their search for employment. Living in remote areas limits both their job opportunities and their access to education and work training: even when indigenous people move to areas where jobs are more readily available, they often lack crucial work experience.
