Document Summary

Far less biological view, emphasizes social aspects of growth. Challenges of adolescence and entire life revolve around trying to satisfy changing interpersonal needs. As children develop, different interpersonal needs surface that lead either to security or anxiety. During middle childhood, kids need to be accepted into peer groups or they feel rejected and ostracized. Feelings of security are the glue that holds one"s sense of self together. Identity and self esteem gradually built up through interpersonal relationships. Psychosocial development is cumulative and the frustrations and satisfactions experienced during earlier periods affect later relationships and developing sense of identity. The need for intimacy precedes development of romantic or sexual relationships. First develops in context of same sex relationships. Quality of same sex friendships is predictive of quality of later romantic relationships. One of main challenges is making transition from nonsexual intimate same sex friendships to sexual, intimate, other sex ones of late adolescence.
