Grooveshark launched in 2007, model similar to napster. Listeners were charged with uploading songs to a server and then shared in profits when songs were purchased and downloaded. Agreements between record companies and newer sites alloed users to stream songs without paying for downloads. Allowed users to maintain free accounts and charged small monthly fees to eliminate ads or for mobile access.
