1850s: edouard-leon scott de martinville conducted the first experiment with sound recording. 1886 chichester bell and charles summer tainter created the graphophone. Eventually used for music recording, but was limited because of quality. Cbs created the long-playing record, with about 20 minutes of music on each side. Audiotape made sound editing possible and multiple track mixing. Stereo permitted the recording of two separate channels/ tracks of sound. Convergence with the internet began to unravel the music industry in the 2000s. Mp3 was a compressed more manageable music file. Lost tons of music sales to mp3 dowloads. 2001 supreme court ruled free-music file swapping was illegal. Music industry realized they would have to adapt to the digital format. Itunes launched in 2003, music available for purchase and download. Shifting from ownership of music to renting/access to music. Stream music from the internet- access to millions of songs.
