Document Summary

Human rights defenders are concerned about everyone. Its about the rights of humans everywhere, not just those of a single ethnic group or nation. This is the principle of universality, as opposed to national partiality. The nazis intolerance of difference produced discrimination and violent brutality. The human rights ideal believes in equal rights for all, and urges a tolerance of difference. The goal is to end discrimination, and to swap for violent brutality a non-violent respect for all persons. The human rights ideal believes in democracy and political participation, and insists that everyone has the right to social recognition - at the very least, as a rights-bearing member of humankind. A legal right is a right that has been codified: this means it has been written into the law, and there exists a concrete remedy (such as a fine) for cases in which it is violated.
