Document Summary

Components of perception: three components, perceiver, a target that is being perceived, situational complex in which the perception is occurring. Involves interpretation and the addition of meaning to the target and ambiguous targets are susceptible to interpretation and addition: providing more information about the target will improve perceptual accuracy, this is not always the case. The situation: every instance of perception comes along with situational context which can affect what one perceives, the most important effect that the situation can have is to add information about the target. Initial perception can be changed but it will take many contradictory cues before one categorizes the target: three important characteristics of the perceptual process. Perception is selective: do not use all available cues and those they use are given special emphasis. Illustrates that our perceptual system works to paint a constant picture of the target.
