BI110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Gibbs Free Energy, Chemical Reaction, Endergonic Reaction
Document Summary
Living organisms buid and break down molecules, pump ions across membranes, move and in general function largely through chemical reactions. Organisms break down food molecules storing energy in the bonds of atp which powers chemical reactions to sustain life. Chemical reactions are central to life processes. Chemical reaction is a process where reactants are transformed into other molecules (products) Atoms keep their identitiy but bonds linking the atoms change. The products can react to form the reactants. A forward reactions precedes from left to right and vice versa. The direction of the reaction can be in uenced by concentrations of reactants and products. Increasing concentration of the reactants or decreasing the concentration of the products favours the forward reaction. This e ect explains how many reactions in metabolic pathways proceed. Gibbs free energy: amount of energy available to do work.
