Causation and experimental design: the goal of most social science research is to figure out why things happen, do(cid:374)"t (cid:272)o(cid:373)e easil(cid:455, most social science research uses data collection methods. What causes what: five criteria: with the first 3 being generally accepted for establishing a causal effect, empirical association, temporal priority of the independent variable, nonspuriousness, identifying causal mechanism, specifying the context in which effect occurs. Association: association: variation in one is empirically related to variation in another variable, can also be called a correlation. Time order: change in independent variable came before change in dependent variable, e. g motivational speakers say in order to achieve success, you really need to believe in yourself. Or would it be because those in better schools usually have higher income parents. Context: context: is the larger set of circumstances in which an outcome is understood, example maybe higher pay would make workers want to work harder in capitalist.
