Chapter 12 - medicine, medical dominance, and public health. We look to medicine to find cures for illnesses - while people often respect medicine since it is scientific. The scientific approach to illness is a recent development. Pain has always sought to be relieved and theories about disease and illness have changed. Many societies attributed illness to spiritual causes & turned to shamans when they got sick. Supernatural causes were first challenged by hippocrates who rejected superstition and said that every disease had natural causes. Developed the humoral theory of disease which stated that the four natural elements were associated w/ humour that caused illness when they were not in balance. Christian"s attributed disease and illness to a test of their faith and commitment to god (ex. Someone with a disability was considered the offspring of parents who were sinners)
