He believed that illness resulted when these 4 humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile). Early christianity attributed disease and illness as a punishment for sin. Following the age of enlightenment, science and medical knowledge developed in leaps and wounds, new ideas in phsyics, biology etc. In the 19th century, new centuries like improvements in the microscope x-rays. The discovery of the cell and the germ theory of disease.
