Sociology 1020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: George Herbert Mead, Margaret Mead, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
Powerful, unseen forces with spiritual or religious meanings determine people"s actions. Human genetics determined much of our nature . Eugenics movement: the perfect human gene pool, eliminates lower aspects of human behaviour (such as crime and poverty) Genetic engineering: the control o breeding within and between the races . Cultures can produce patterns of human behaviour that cannot be reduced to our genetic makeup. Key issues: how much free will humans can exercise; how much people/children can resist attempts to influence them; how much any one social institution can shape behaviours if there are contradictory influences at work in their lives. Socialization: the process by which someone is taught to live among other humans; intends to ensure both the physical survival of individual members and the survival of the group or culture. A person can experience difficulties in getting along with others when any of these are missing: prosocial motivations, social skills, or cultural knowledge.
