Idea that personality can be revealed through differences in how people perceive their environment. If the person relies on their own sensations, not the visual perceptions of the field to make the judgement then they are filed independent. Field-independent students took natural sciences, math and engineering whereas the field-dependent students tended to favour social sciences and education. Dependence on interpersonal relationships field dependent are attentive to social cues and oriented towards people in general whereas field indepent people function more autonomy and detached orientation to others. Field-independent are better at ignoring distracting information and focusing on important details of events e. g. study with police officers in stimulus rich environment.
