Need to be recurrent and persistent; unwanted, intrusive. Epidemiology: 1. 6-2. 7% lifetime prevalence; begins late adolescence or early adulthood (can begin in childhood); sometimes triggered onset by significant event, symptoms present in childhood = more severe and greater impairment to daily functioning as adult. Bfrb - body focused repetitive behaviour category of dsm ; skin picking, nail biting, thumb sucking. Can be ocrd but not ocd as behaviour is physically motivated. First phase limited: not everyone w/ ocd are able to remember early conditioning experience. Little research, most on bdd and ttm due to novelty of hoarding and excoriation. Sociocultural factors: play role in onset and maintenance of bdd given high value society places on appearance. Form of avoidance as discarding possessions leads to loss, grief, anger and anxiety.
