Defined as the study of the occurrence and distribution of health-related states or events in specified populations, including the study of the determinants influencing such states and the application of this knowledge to control the health problems. Most well known is public heath epidemiology; two streams: exposure-orientated sub-disciplines (nutritional, social, disease-orientated (cancer, injury, perinatal) Purpose of epidemiology is to describe, explain, predict and control challenges to population health. As medical scientists discovered and implemented new treatments, primary cause of death changed form contagious to chronic (influenced by lifestyle) The web of causation: a model of web of causation can be helpful to chns in visualizing the relationships among the many causes or influences of a given health challenge. Crude mortality rate = total death from any cause /average total population (in a year) Specific mortality= death of specific cause/number of subgroup pop. Infant death= total death of infants/number of live births. Prevalence rate= number of people with disease/total in pop.
