Nurses must provide leadership to ensure quality practice environment, high quality patient care and patient safety. Healthy practice environment begins with senior nurse leaders in the organization (chief nurse executive, chief nursing officer/director) Provincial nursing policy offices lead by nurses to influence government to take to ensure high quality nursing services. Nursing care delivery models, collaborative practice, nursing teams. Tradition models of care: functional nursing, team nursing, primary care. Primary care: patient outcomes and relationships among staff: places rns at patients bedside and improve nursing accountability for, emphasizes collaborative relationships, evidence informed practice, continuity of care. Functional nursing: popular during wwii due to shortage, focused on tasks rather than assuming responsibility for a group of patients, absence of holistic view, lack of continuity of care, become mechanical. Practice today: nurse giving meds to patient in long term setting. Staff at all levels be involved in decision making.
