Document Summary
Linguistic units are dual in nature, comprising in two elements that are both psychological and are connected in the brain by an associative link. A linguistic sign is a link between a concept and a sound pattern. Sound pattern is the hearer"s psychological impression of a sound, as given to hum by the evidence of his senses. The linguistic sign has two fundamental characteristics: the sign is arbitrary. The signal is unmotivated, therefore arbitrary in relation to its signification, with which it has no natural connection in reality. However two (insufficient) objections can be made to this: onomatopoeic words and exclamations: linear character of the signal. The linguistic signal, being auditory in nature, has a temporal aspect, and hence certain temporal characteristics: This space is measured in just one dimension: Myth is a type of speech it is a line.
