Ethical issues faced by coaches: asked male and female athletes independently. Main issues: decisions made between what"s good for the team or for the individuals involved. Most common things to consider were the coach"s morals/values/ethical beliefs: fair play, concern for the individual, respect for others. Analysis of coaches; responses compared w athletes" responses. The ethical issues discussed by athletes differed than those proposed by the coaches. Athletes went into far more detail (chapter 5) compared to that of coaches" reasoning (chapter 6) regarding why they make the decisions they do in light of ethical issues. Difference b/w athletes & coaches perceptions/resolution of ethical issues brings in notion of autonomy: autonomy: free-informed choice. If coaches perceive something to be an ethical issue but athletes don"t perceive as an ethical issue, should players be made to reconsider their views. Conceptions of autonomy: coaches w high degree of power over athletes- possibility of athlete"s autonomy would be limited.
