Chapter 8: self-concept, self-esteem, body image and exercise. In this chapter, we focus on global and domain-specific types of self-perception (how we think and feel about ourselves): self-esteem, self-concept, and body image. *these terms may be closely related, but they are not interchangeable. An individual can hold different self-concepts across many domains (i. e. , positive self-concept in academic realm, but a negative self-concept in the physical realm) These domain-specific self-concepts contribute to a general self-concept. This model is organized so that situational-specific and unstable self-evaluations are at the bottom, the furthest away from general self-concept; more global and stable evaluations appear toward the top. The base level of the hierarchy is defi(cid:374)ed (cid:271)(cid:455) o(cid:374)e(cid:859)s behaviour in specific situations.
