Document Summary

List the structures and basic functions of the nervous system. Describe the organization of the nervous system. Explain the functional organization of the peripheral nervous system. It is the smallest, yet most complex body system that contains neurons and neuroglia. It is composed of the brain, cranial nerves, cranial branches, the spinal cord, spinal nerves and branches, ganglia, enteric plexuses, and sensory receptors. Divided into the central and peripheral nervous system due to the length of the cells of the nervous system. Consists of the brain and spinal cord which connect to one another through the foramen magnum. It processes sensory information and produces thoughts, memories, and emoitions. Nerves that stimulate muscle contractions and gland secretion originate here. It has 12 pairs of cranial nerves & 31 pairs of spinal nerves which follow a path to a body region - ganglia are closely associated with both types of nerves.
