SOC355H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 22: Cost Overrun, Environmental Organization
Document Summary
Cote and erickson (2009) discuss the influence of networks, voluntary associations and attributes on tolerance. They recognize that there are different types of diversities that can be measured in a social network, consisting of middle class, working class, male and female ties. Their findings support the competition hypothesis in which individuals are likely to view minorities as a threat because they are vying for employment opportunities in their field. This was demonstrated by professional associations, who generally have a higher intolerance toward minorities despite their educational background, income and residence in a metropolitan city. The authors also find that with greater diversity of ties to middle class people is related to greater tolerance for minorities, and diversity of ties to working class people promotes lower intolerance. This was observed as there is a higher level of education among middle class.
