SOC101Y1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Social Constructionism, Ethnic Stereotype, De Jure
Document Summary
Race may refer to skin colour, religion, nationality, human species based on assumption that race is a grouping or classification based on genetic variations in physical appearance. Biological race is not a meaningful concept (little meaning in biological sense because of interbreeding) Race = socially constructed reality, not biological. Races don"t actually exist, but some groups are still racially defined because the idea is placed in minds that races = distinct biological categories with physically distinguishable characteristics and shared common cultural heritage. Research shows there is no identifiable racially based genetic differences in humans (dna -> humans = one race) Social consequences include: prejudice, discrimination -> life chances and opportunities. Race = category of people singled out as inferior or superior, usually on basis of real or alleged physical characteristics (i. e. skin colour, hair texture, eye shape, subjectively selected attributes) - asian canadians, african canadians, natives.
