SOC101Y1 Study Guide - Final Guide: Conflict Theories, Herding, Class Discrimination
Document Summary
Race is a category of people who have been singles out as inferior or superior, often on the basis of real of alleged physical characteristic, such as skin color, hair texture, eye shape, or other subjectively selected characteristics. Popular usage of race is the idea that race is a grouping or classification based on genetic variations in physical appearance, particularly skin color. The idea of race has little meaning because of the enormous amount of interbreeding that has been taken place within the human population. Races as such do not actually exist, but some groups are still racially defined because the idea persists in many people"s mind that races are distinct biological characteristic with physically distinguishable characteristics and a shared common culture heritage. Social significance we put into race is more important (prejudice and discrimination) Race refers only to the physical characteristics; the concept of ethnicity refers to the cultural features.
