Hunger isn"t just a behaviour used for survival, it is a biological drive that influences what we pay attention to and interacts with out past experiences and current mental states (i. e. excitement & anxiety) (stress eating) Motivation: concerns the physiological and psychological process underlying initiation of behaviours that direct organisms toward specific goals: motives include the thoughts, feelings, sensations and bodily processes that lead to goal directed behaviour. Homeostasis: body"s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment. Allostasis: motivation not only influenced by current needs but also by anticipation of future needs: i. e. janice eating more candy to maintain her energy levels. Need to consume nutrients involves physiological responses as well as cognitive and emotional factors. Switches involved in hunger can be found in few regions of hypothalamus (set of nuclei found on bottom surface of brain)
