Humans need to satisfy needs for food, water, clothing and shelter in order to survive. Each of these needs is associated with a motivation, some sort of psychological process that will cause us to perform a particular behavior. Humans have many different types of needs, some of which are less straightforward than the need to eat. These involve social processes, as well as our need for meaning and a purpose in life. In an early attempt to understand the different (cid:373)oti(cid:448)atio(cid:374)s that d(cid:396)i(cid:448)e hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) (cid:271)eha(cid:448)io(cid:396), a(cid:271)(cid:396)aha(cid:373) maslo(cid:449) des(cid:272)(cid:396)i(cid:271)ed a (cid:862)hie(cid:396)a(cid:396)(cid:272)h(cid:455) of (cid:374)eeds(cid:863), (cid:449)ith (cid:374)eeds associated with our basic physiological survival being more important than social or achievement needs. Once survival needs are met, they we can move to higher level needs such as the need of belonging or the need for self-esteem. At the highest point of the model lies self-actualization, the point at which a person reaches their full potential as a creative, deep-thinking and accepting human beings.
