Document Summary
Needs associated with our basic physiological survival are more important than social or achievement needs. Must fulfill needs before moving onto higher-level needs. Highest point is self-actualization: the point at which a person reaches their full potential as a creative, deep-thinking, and accepting human being. Idea that we must fulfill one need before moving to next is simplistic and you can have multiple motivations at the same time: biased towards individualistic (western) culture. Belonging is a need, not a want. Need to belong: motivation to maintain relationships that involve pleasant feelings such as warmth, affection, appreciation, and mutual concern for each person"s well-being. Sense of permanence is most important for well-being. Loneliness is risk factor for illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Love composed of passionate and compassionate love. Passionate love: associated with physical and emotional longing for other person: associated with brain areas related to physical rewards.
