Document Summary

We have several different types of memory, each involving different networks of brain areas (rosenbaum et al. A memory store that accurately holds perceptual information for a very brief amount of time. Iconic memory - visual form of sensory memory, held for about one-half to one second. Echoic memory - auditory form of sensory memory, held for longer but still only for five seconds. Disappear faster than an individual can report them. George sperling devised a method for testing storage capacity of iconic memory; grid of letters on screen followed by reporting. He hypothesized that the memory of the letters actually faded faster than the participants could report them. So in second half, a tone (high, medium, low) followed a bunch of letters but the recall was still the same . He concluded that iconic memory could hold information long enough for a bunch of it to be reported, not all. Attention is what prevents us from forgetting stuff quickly.
