PHL210Y1 Chapter Notes - Chapter Shepherd: Middle Term, Syllogism
Document Summary
4:09 am: berkeley: to be is to be perceived, real things or objects are only ideas. Shepherd disagrees with b that objects are only what we perceive by sense, or that complete enumeration is made of all the ideas which constitute an apple, stone etc, in summing of their sensible qualities. Real things or objects are only ideas. (minds exist though, its not that all things are ideas) Objects are constituted by a collection of qualities. Shepherd: an object perceived by the mind is a compound being. There needs to be something behind those qualities. Suggests that ideas are imprinted on the senses: shepherd: this is an ambiguity. Shepherd: the organs of sense are mechanical instruments, they have no sense/feeling in themselves as independent of the mind. "i perceive the apple by means of my sense organs, there is something there and its affecting my sense of sight, etc: perceiving by sense implies some sort of reference to sense organs.
