PHL210Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Hylas, God L, Empiricism
Document Summary
Innate ideas: things that are true in all possible worlds (necessary truths) D closes this gap by appealing to god. L: can also appeal to god, but god doesn"t give us access to this reality. Belief in matter is the source of paradoxes. Belief in the absolute existence of material substance leads people to give metaphysical califity to physical explanation: assumption there"s a domain of material substances that are not being perceived. 2 kinds of materialism: primary qualities inhere in the objects and we perceive directly (something making something the way it is); secondary qualities exist only in the mind (result of subjective state) Impossibility of abstracting p and s qualities from eachother: how do we break apart the two qualities, e. g. how can i talk about the desk only in terms of primary. Not the case that we perceive things the same way, variability in perception, classification. Variability extends to primary and secondary qualities.
