Chapter 13: treatments for depression and bipolar disorder. Mental disorders- impairment in normal behavioural and cognitive, emotional functioning. Dysthymic disorder- mild depression; symptoms: depressed mood; at least 2 symptoms for depression. Major depression with psychotic features- hallucinations and delusions relate to depressed mood and negative thoughts. Vascular depression- depressed symptoms associated with poor blood flow in the brain; potential reason for depression in elderly as vasculature throughout the body become less permeable, less brain activity may contribute. Monoamine hypothesis: monoamine deficiency causes depressive mood; drugs were developed based on this hypothesis. Mao inhibitors- antidepressant drugs that prevent mao from breaking down monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, tyramine) Irreversible mao inhibitor- antidepressant drugs that irreversibly inhibit mao. Reversible mao inhibitors- antidepressant; either temporarily binds to mao or allows other compounds to displace the drug from mao. Trycyclic antidepressant drugs- block the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin; function as antagonist (muscarinic acetylcholine receptors) Elevation of serotonin and norepinephrine levels at synapses;
