Chapter 13: treatment for depression and bipolar disorder. Monoamine neurotransmitters were central to the actions of the antidepressant drugs. Therapeutic drugs- drugs used for treating mental disorders. Also refer to dsm for de ning different types of mental disorders. Mental disorder- impairment in normal behavioral, cognitive, emotional functioning. An individual experience signi cant stress from the disorder and that disorder does not arise from a medical condition with a clear physiological cause. Major depressive disorder- at least 5 symptoms occurring within the same. Sx: depressed mood, lack of interest/pleasure in activities, change in body weight, change in sleep, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, dif culties thinking/concentrating, death thoughts. Interfere with normal everyday activities (work, chores, social) Dysthymic disorder- depressed mood that occurs nearly every day for at least 2 years (at least 2 symptoms) Non-speci c descriptions (weight gain/loss, sleep a lot/too little)
