Document Summary

Clarflin 2015 emerging treatments for motor rehab after stroke. Stroke = leading cause of acquired disability worldwide: majority experience incomplete recovery of motor deficits despite intensive rehab. Goal of stroke rehab = maximize patients" neurologic recovery, functional independence, & quality of life. Drugs modulating brain amine concentrations influence the rate & degree of recovery from cortical lesions. Trials generally demonstrate that ssris are efficacious in treating/preventing post-stroke depression; reported neurologic recovery, functional recovery, & independence with daily activities: 52 clinical trials found significant benefits of ssris in reducing disability. Potential side effects increased risk of bleeding (higher risk of overall major & non-significantly higher risk of intracranial: although lower risk of new cv events & stroke, overall mortality & mortality due to bleeding event were increased. Restricting the use of the unaffected upper extremity by a mitt/sling will force an individual to use the affected limb to complete task-based activities, affecting neuroplastic change & improving upper extremity function over time.
