PSYC14H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Individualism, Big Five Personality Traits, Collectivism
Document Summary
People all over the world are able to think of themselves in term of both abstract and psychological attributes and concrete roles and relationships. Some cultures encourage people to focus on their enduring inner attributes, such as personality traits, attitudes, or abilities, as a means to understand themselves. Other cultures, encourage people to focus on their connections with others by considering themselves in terms of concrete roles, relationships, and group memberships. The twenty statements test us one of the most widely used cross-cultural psychological measures (we did it in class as an activity) Relationships come in a variety of forms, and they require people to take on particular roles (such as father, student, friend) that govern how they feel and behave toward their relationship partners. Self-concepts are shaped by the cultural practices that direct what individuals attend to, value, believe and are able to attain.
