Document Summary
Week 3 may 18 th , 2015. Respondent extinction: a decrease in a conditioned response due to a cs no longer being followed by a us: e. g. , ignoring a child"s whining leads them to eventually stop whining and to alter their approach. Forgetting: a behavior is weakened as a function of time following its last occurrence. Factors influencing the effectiveness of operant extinction: need to ensure that the right reinforcers are being withheld, and that the reinforcers are fully controlled. E. g. , everyone needs to be on board; you need to withhold the actual reinforcers: extinction is most effective when it is paired with a positive reinforcement of an alternative behavior. Increase in the requirement of the desirable behavior must be very gradual. E. g. , ignoring whining or yelling and praising the use of polite tone: the setting is important. Maximize the possibility that other people will reinforce the behavior you are trying to decrease.
