PSYB45H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Reinforcement
Document Summary
Week 3 may 18 th , 2015. Respondent extinction: a decrease in a conditioned response due to a cs no longer being followed by a us: e. g. , ignoring a child"s whining leads them to eventually stop whining and to alter their approach. Factors to consider in extinction: need to make sure that the right reinforcers are being withheld, and that the reinforcers are fully controlled. E. g. , everyone needs to be on board; you need to withhold the actual reinforcers: extinction is most effective when it is paired with a positive reinforcement of an alternative behavior. E. g. , ignoring whining or yelling and praising the use of polite tone: the setting is important. Extinction happens more quickly if the behavior was previously reinforced every time (continuous reinforcement) and now is suddenly never reinforced: the target behavior may get worse (increase) before it gets better. Extinction burst: an increase in behavior during extinction.
