Substance dependence primary symptoms of tolerance and withdrawal; tolerance - larger doses needed for e ect, e ect is less if usual amount is taken; withdrawal - negative physical and psych e ects if you stop taking/reduced amt. Substance abuse need to have 1 of the following - failure to ful ll major obligations, exposure to physical dangers, legal problems, persistent social or interpersonal problems. Dsm5 combined into substance-related and addictive disorders. Polydrug (polysubstance) abuse alcohol abuse or dependence combined with other drugs; using or abusing more than one drug at a time; drugs taken together cause synergistic e ects - each combines to produce an especially strong reaction. Can have delirium tremens (dts) person becomes delirious and has visual/tactile hallucinations when alcohol level in blood drops suddenly. Keep drinking - higher tolerance and levels of alcohol in blood are low because body adapts to it and can process it more e ciently.
