Dsm-5 puts dependence and abuse together into substance-related addiction disorders (dsm4 did not do this); old dsm said if you are dependent and you abuse, it is an addiction disorder. Theory that social drinking is a stepping stone to only drinking alcohol lots of people would keep using and at 30, they would stop because of their responsibilities - recent research shows this, rather than them continuing. Delirium tremens (dts) shaking, trembling, visual & tactile hallucinations; happens when level of alcohol drops dramatically - means that they stopped drinking and before that, would be drinking all the time so it"s a withdrawal. Poly-drug abuse abusing a number of di erent substances. Prevalence of alcohol abuse more common in men, white people, single people, a uent people - young, white, single, well-o male is likely to develop it. Comorbidity lots of comorbidity; personality disorders, depression, anxiety.
