Infants head is gigantic compared to rest of body-> characteristic highlights the cephalocaudal and proximodistal principles of early growth and physical development. At 1 year- brain is 70% of its adult weight, but rest of body is only 10-20% of adult weight. Head becomes proportaionally smaller as child grows in height and lower parts of body develop. Sensory and motor development follow the same principle; infants see objects before they can control their torso, and they learn to use upper parts of body before lower parts. Boys and girls show similar patterns of growth; however boys are gnearlly a bit heavier and taller than girls.
