Chapter 5: physical development & health, birth to age 3. Infancy begins at birth & ends when child begins walking & stringing words together between 12 & 18 months of age. 36 months, period when children become more verbal, independent, & able to move about. Newborns become infants & toddlers => children => adolescents - each of 3 aspects of development is bound up with others. All areas of development are interrelated, & development proceeds in complex, reciprocal fashion. Describe early patterns of growth & appropriate nutrition for young children. Outline brain development in infants & explain importance of early experiences. Summarize the early sensory capacities of young infants. List major motor milestones & summarize major theories of motor development and the impact of culture. Review major health and safety issues for infants and toddlers. 1st 3 years are time of explosive growth & development. Never again will person grow so quickly/change so rapidly.
