Hostile Aggression- Behavior intended to harm another, either physically or
psychologically, and motivated by feelings of anger and hostility
Instrumental aggression- Behavior intended to harm another in the service of motives
other than our hostility (e.g. to attract attention, to acquire wealth, or to advance political
and ideological causes)
SITUATIONAL DETERMINANTS OF AGGRESSION
The right situational factors can give rise to violence
Aggression rises because of aggressive people
Scientists have discovered that certain genes many predispose people to aggression, but

Heat
People believe that the weather has a connection to mood specifically heat and aggression
There are higher rates of crime in hotter regions and in the hotter months, with the
exception of the month of December

Misattribution process states that people are aroused by heat but people are unaware of
this
When there is a start of conflict we give arousal towards the situation, this misattributed
arousal gives rise to aggression
Media Violence
Western Media contains a lot of violence and aggression; exposure to media violence
increases aggressive behavior
In many lab studies its proven that viewing aggressive movies does make a person more
aggressive
Exposure to violent pornography in especially increases endorsement of aggression against
women
People tend to act more aggressively after viewing a film if they identified with the
character that was perpetrating the violent act
