Sentences are not made of words but are made of more complex structures. Syntax= greek syn (with) + greek tag/tak (order/structure) Every sentence is a sequence of words but not every sequence of words is a sentence. Sequences sequences of words that conform to the rules of syntax are well formed. Much of what we learn about syntax comes from the theories and research of noam chomsky. Grammaticality is not based on meaning, on the truth of the sentences or on the topic discussed: To form a sentence, words must conform to specific patterns determined by the syntactic rules of the language. Principles/rules that construct sentences; they allow speakers to reveal: Same words different order changes the meaning see slides for example.
