Chapter 7 Health Promotion
Warwick et al.
What is health promotion?
Health promotion—for many is seen as media campaigns, handing out leaflets and
generally informing people about the do’s and dont’s of health relates lifestyle
behaviour !
Origins of health promotion- UK context
HP a term often interchanged with the term public health
Origins of the two are often in parallel and intertwined !
Referred to as co-ordinated community action to ensure a better life have existed for
millennial and represent the ideals of both public health and health promotion!
First public health manifesto developed in Manchester in 1796—as a result of the
negative eects of the industrial revolution upon the workforce, acknowledged the
root causes of ill health were determined by social and economic factors rather than
biological factors !
This key feature of the social model of health—especially important when
considering what public health and health promotion are !
Overtime, Public health categorized in distinct phases that have shaped our
perceptions go health promotion and public health today !
Sanitary phase of 1840 onwards concentrated on environmental engineering to
provide clean water and sewerage, improve housing and working conditions !
Personal hygiene phase of 1910 onwards (in which health education emerged)
emphasized the education of populations about their cleanliness, personal behaviour
and therefore responsibility for their own ill health and health!
Provided a springboard for the development of the health education movement
and its legacy that we still see today !
Central Council for Health Education was founded in 1927!
Public health departments were located within local authorities, where, arguably,
they could tackle the environmental and SDOH!
There were also signs of social movements that underpinned the development of
HP such as the National Unemployed Workers Movement & the Committee
Against Malnutrition
Therapeutic Phase—1930 onwards was characterized by the medicalization of
public health and strongly associated with the prevention of ill health through
biomedical interventions such as vaccination and treatment of ill health through the
use of antibiotics !
The foundation of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948 reduced the
importance of public health and attached even greater value on treatment and care
rather than primary prevention, which still resonates in the public consciousness
today !
