The prevalence of exposure to a factor is measured in each group. If the prevalence of exposure among cases and controls is different is possible to infer that the exposure may be associate with an increase or decreased occurrence of the outcome of interest. Case control allows the evaluation of a wide range of exposures that might relate to a specific disease as well as the interaction between them. Studies the etiology of a disease or condition: due to its ability to look at a wide range of exposures and partly because they can be conducted cheaply and quickly. You need precise criteria for the definition of a case: you should include objective evidence that the cases really suffer from the disease or else your case group may have some non-cases thus altering the results.
