ANTC67H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3 (pg 39-51): Randomized Controlled Trial, Clinical Trial, Longitudinal Study
Document Summary
Chapter 3 types of studies (pg 39-51) Epidemiological studies are either observational or experimental. Descriptive study - limited to description of the occurrence of a disease in a population and is often the first step in an epidemiological investigation. Analytical study - goes further by analyzing relationships between health status and other variables. Aka intervention studies - involve an active attempt to change a disease determinant or the progress of a disease through treatment. Randomized controlled trials using patients as subjects (clinical trials) Field trials in which the participants are healthy people. Community trials in which the participants are the communities themselves. A clear definition of the disease and exposed person is necessary. Description of the health status of a community based on routinely available data/survey data. Pure descriptive studies don"t analyze the links between exposure and effect. The units of analysis are groups of people rather than individuals.
