Social interaction: involves people communicating face to face or via computer, acting and reacting in relation to other people. It is structured around norms, roles, and statutes. Concerning status; people with a higher status get more laughs and people with lower status laugh more. Role con ict: occurs when two one more statuses held at the same time place contradictory role demands on a person. Role strain: occurs when incompatible role demands are placed on a person in a single status. Statuses, roles, and norms structure laughter as well as in uence other emotions. Feminists are the rst to point out the aws in the view that emotional responses are involuntary. We manage our emotions, they don"t just happen. Arlie russell hochschild coined the term emotion management: the act of obeying feeling rules and responding appropriately to situations.
