Chapter 4: from social interaction to social organizations. Social interaction: involves people communicating face to face or via computer, acting and reacting in relation to other people. It is structured around norms, roles, and statuses. Feminist sociologists see that gender structures interaction patterns. Laughter; if we define status as a recognized social position, it is generally true that people with higher statuses(men) will get more laughs, whereas people with lower status(women) will laugh more. Feminists were first to note the flaw in the view that emotional responses are typically involuntary. Ex) grizzly bear attacking- run, lie down, calm, play dead- can control emotions: we know the culturally designated emotional response to a particular external stimulus and we try to respond appropriately. Emotional management: the a(cid:272)t of o(cid:271)eying (cid:862)feeling rules(cid:863) and responding appropriately to situations. Emotional labour: emotion management that many people do as part of their job and for which they are paid.
