One of the principal roles of the hippocampus is to allow memory consolidation; it participates in the formation of long term memories by helping to convert short term sensory signals into long-term or permanently encoded memories; Consolidation is the process by which memoires are converted to very long-lasting forms; An open question right now is whether there might be multiple hippocampus-dependent memory consolidation processes that subserve memories of various durations; Hippocampus is involved in perceptual processing of information regarding space, timing and relationships among objects (thus the hippocampus plays a role in multimodal information processing along with memory consolidation) The hippocampus receives direct or indirect inputs from all the sensory areas of the cortex, including the areas of the cortex involved in the late stages of visual information processing, the auditory cortex and the somatosensory cortex; Sensory information from these cortical regions is funnelled down to the hippocampus via the perirhinal and entorhinal cortices;
